griechisch Arrianọs, lateinisch Arrianus, Flavius, griechisch attizistischer Schriftsteller, * etwa 95, ✝ 175, aus Nikomedia in Bithynien; war etwa 128/129 römischer Konsul, nach 130 Statthalter von Kappadokien. Er gab zusammen mit einem »Handbüchlein« die Aufzeichnungen seines Lehrers Epiktet heraus. Seine »Anabasis« Alexanders des Großen ist die wichtigste Quelle für dessen Geschichte. Arrians Werk über Indien (»Indike«) bringt nach Herodots Vorbild in ionischem Dialekt Nachrichten aus den Schriften des Megasthenes und des Nearchos. Weitere meist historische Werke sind fragmentarisch erhalten. Vorbild für Arrians schlichten Stil ist Xenophon.
